Application and function of BASF environmental protection plasticizer DINCH in coatings

Return to list Release date:2022-03-10

Application and function of BASF environmental protection plasticizer DINCH in coatings. It is very important to understand the knowledge of additives for coatings and select appropriate additives in the design of formula.
There are many kinds of coating additives according to their role in the coating, such as thickener affecting the viscosity characteristics of the coating, pigment anti precipitation agent and anti scaling agent affecting the storage performance of the coating, drying agent and film-forming coalescing agent affecting the film-forming performance of the coating, thixotropic agent and leveling agent affecting the construction performance of the coating, plasticizer, mildew inhibitor There are many kinds of ultraviolet absorbers, matting agents and so on. This paper is limited to space and only introduces it. 1、 Plasticizer
The function of plasticizer is to increase the softness of film. For some coating base materials which are brittle in themselves, plasticizers are essential to obtain films with good softness and other mechanical properties. Plasticizers are usually organic compounds with low molecular weight and low volatility, but some polymer resins can also be used as plasticizers (also known as plasticizing resins), such as alkyd resins, which are commonly used as plasticizing resins for chlorinated rubber and nitrocellulose coatings. Both plasticizer and plasticized resin must have good miscibility with the plasticized resin.
The plasticizer shall have low toxicity. While increasing the flexibility of the film, the hardness of the film shall be reduced as little as possible, and the film shall not change color, especially when the film is used outdoors. The type and dosage of plasticizer vary according to the different base resin in the coating and the different application requirements of the coating.
The plasticizing effect of the plasticizer is achieved by reducing the glass transition temperature (TG) of the base resin. The glass transition temperature (TG) is the transition temperature of the resin from hard and brittle solid state (glass state) to rubber like elastomer state (high elastic state). Plasticizers can generally be divided into two categories. One is the main plasticizer (solvent plasticizer), the other is the auxiliary plasticizer (non solvent plasticizer). Transparent, odorless and environment-friendly plasticizer DINCH main plasticizer is like the solvent of base resin. Some of their groups can interact with some groups in the resin, so the main plasticizer and resin can be miscible with each other. Because the molecule of plasticizer is small, it can enter the molecular structure of resin polymer and reduce the rigidity of resin, but the addition of plasticizer will also cause some loss of mechanical properties of film.

Plasticizers have no dissolving effect on the base resin. They can be miscible with the base resin only when the amount is not too much. The auxiliary plasticizer has only physical effect (lubrication effect) on the base resin, so its effect on the mechanical strength of the film is not as great as that of the main plasticizer. However, the plasticizer is easy to migrate or penetrate from the film, which makes the flexibility of the film worse.
The addition of plasticizer in the coating has a certain impact on many properties of the film, such as tensile strength, strength and toughness, extensibility, permeability and adhesion. The effects on these properties vary according to the type of base polymer and plasticizer. Generally speaking, the addition of plasticizer will increase the extensibility of the film and reduce its tensile strength. Within a certain amount of plasticizer, the permeability of the film will basically remain unchanged, but when the amount of plasticizer continues to increase, the permeability of the film will increase sharply. The strength, toughness and adhesion of the film first increased with the addition of plasticizer, but gradually decreased after reaching a peak. In addition to affecting the mechanical properties of the film, the non-toxic plasticizer DINCH will also affect some other properties of the film. Therefore, the most appropriate amount of plasticizer should be determined after comprehensive balance according to the consideration of various factors.
The plasticizers commonly used in several coatings are briefly introduced below.
I Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a plasticizer, has good miscibility with various resins, so it is widely used in coatings. Dibutyl phthalate has little tendency to yellowing, and dibutyl phthalate is commonly used in coatings such as nitrocellulose coating and polyvinyl acetate emulsion.
II Dioctyl phthalate (DOP) has similar properties to dibutyl phthalate mentioned above, but it has less volatility and good light and heat resistance. It is commonly used in nitrocellulose coatings, polyvinyl chloride plastic sol and organic sol coatings.
